The Dos and Don’ts of Puppy Crate Training
- by Newton Bogan
Bringing home a new puppy can be an exciting time, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. One of the most important things you can do for your new furry friend is to properly crate train them. But where do you start? In this article, we’ll be discussing the dos and don’ts of puppy crate training.
DO: Start slow. The first thing you want to do is introduce your puppy to their crate slowly. Leave the door open and allow them to explore the crate on their own. You can even place some treats, toys, or a soft blanket inside to make it more inviting. Once they start to go in and out of the crate by themselves, you can begin to close the door for short periods of time, gradually increasing the length of time they spend inside.
DON’T: Use the crate as punishment. Your puppy’s crate should be a safe and comfortable place for them, not a form of punishment. Never force your puppy into their crate or use it as a time-out spot. This will only create negative associations with the crate and make it harder to properly train them.
DO: Make the crate a positive space. A great way to make the crate a positive space is by feeding your puppy inside. This will create positive associations with the crate and make them more comfortable spending time inside. You can also provide them with toys and treats to keep them entertained.
DON’T: Leave your puppy in the crate for too long. While crate training is an important part of potty training and can keep your puppy safe when you’re not at home, you don’t want to leave them in there for too long. Puppies need plenty of exercise and socialization to develop into healthy and happy adults. Generally, puppies should not be left in their crate for more than a few hours at a time.
DO: Create a routine. Consistency is key when it comes to crate training. Establish a routine for when your puppy eats, sleeps, and goes outside. This will help them get used to the crate as part of their daily routine and make the process of crate training much easier.
Crate training can be a daunting task for new dog owners, but it’s an important part of raising a happy and healthy puppy. By following the dos and don’ts outlined in this blog post, you can ensure that your puppy’s crate is a safe and positive space for them to grow and develop. Remember to start slow, make the crate a positive space, and avoid leaving your puppy in the crate for too long. With patience and consistency, you’ll have a well-trained and happy pup in no time!
